PSVR2 Revealed at CES 2022
One of the significant product reveals to take place during CES 2022 concerned the much-anticipated successor to Sony’s mega-selling Playstation VR. Along with the news that the device would carry the predictable but sensible name of Playstation VR2, details about just what upgrades and new opportunities the device would offer were also provided.
PSVR2: Under the Hood
With the original PSVR selling 5 million units to become (when used with Playstation 4) one of the most used VR systems on the planet, the long-awaited follow-up was sure to be hot news upon its unveiling. CES being the perfect showcase, Sony dished out details of the device to in-person and virtual attendees.
Along with its primary input device, the Sony PSVR2 Sense controller, PSVR2 brings a significantly upgraded experience within reach of both curious VR adventurers and Playstation devotees. With an obvious focus on delivering exquisite gaming experiences – but with plenty of power for a variety of VR uses – the latest iteration of PSVR provides 4K HDR resolution via an OLED display hitting 2000×2040 pixels per eye, 90Hz and 120Hz refresh rates, and a 110° field of view. Perhaps more importantly, PSVR2 also adds four inbuilt headset cameras capable of providing eye and movement tracking natively, an integrated motor providing haptic feedback direct from the headset itself, and IR tracking of handheld PSVR2 Sense controllers, which also come equipped with substantial haptic feedback capabilities.
Aiming High, Hitting Hard
As PSVR2 gears toward release – a date has not yet been announced though most are anticipating a holiday 2022 arrival – there are no doubt plenty of VR users, gamers, in particular, are salivating at what this new and soon-to-be extremely popular device will do to enhance a wide range of virtual experiences.
