Introducing Pimax’s Latest Crystal Headsets

Ambitious Chinese VR hardware developer Pimax has unveiled two new additions to its Crystal line of headsets: Crystal Light and Crystal Super.

The Swift Solution: Crystal Light

Pimax Crystal, the brand’s flagship headset, undergoes a transformation in the form of Pimax Crystal Light. This streamlined version sacrifices certain features to achieve a more budget-friendly price point of $700, shedding 30% of its weight in the process. While still providing a robust PC VR experience, Crystal Light forgoes standalone functionality and such premium features as eye-tracking, IPD adjustment, 60GHz wireless compatibility, dynamic foveated rendering, and internal storage. Additionally, it ditches the Snapdragon XR2 chipset found in the flagship Crystal headset. Despite its more accessible price tag, Crystal Light may not meet the demands of serious VR enthusiasts due to its reduced feature set.

Aiming for Extraordinary: Crystal Super

Pimax Crystal Super aims to solidify the brand’s reputation for exceptional visual quality. With an impressive resolution of 3840×3840-per-eye, Crystal Super promises a “significantly bigger field-of-view” compared to the standard Crystal. Users can select from two lens sets offering either 50 or 57 pixels-per-degree, along with the choice of a 90Hz micro-OLED or 120Hz QLED & mini-LED display. Priced at $1,799 for the QLED model and $1,999 for the micro-OLED version, Crystal Super also offers a bundle option for $2,399, including both interchangeable display types. However, buyers should be prepared to invest in separate controllers and a SteamVR Tracking faceplate. To fully harness the capabilities of Pimax Crystal Super, a robust PC equipped with at least an RTX 2070 graphics card is essential.

Both Pimax Crystal Light and Crystal Super are currently available for preorder, offering consumers a range of options to suit their VR needs. How they will be received by consumers in an increasingly competitive hardware market remains to be seen.
