While mainstream virtual reality experiences are primarily ones of solitary enjoyment, companies like Facebook and AltspaceVR have been developing ways to socialize the technology. Facebook, in particular, has gained some ground in this area. AltspaceVR has gained ground then lost its footing in more than one development cycle. Now, with Microsoft’s purchase of AltspaceVR, the industry seems to be willing to gain confidence in a stabilized social platform. As Microsoft’s Alex Kipman explains, “With the AltspaceVR team onboard, we look forward to building the world’s preeminent mixed reality platform,” Kipman referring to the upcoming launch of Window’s Mixed Reality.
