Virtual reality is a pretty exciting these days. Perhaps nothing better emphasizes our dreams of finally having things like holograms play a role in our daily lives than the mysterious Magic Leap. This augmented reality tech company hasn’t given us a ton of information so far. They remain quite mysterious.
However, from scant details on future goals, to rumors that strongly suggest Magic Leap will utilize a virtual reality headset of some kind, we do have enough insight to start coming up with some plausible theories.
Regardless of what ultimately develops from Magic Leap, there is no question that we are living at the forefront of everything VR/AR has ever promised us. Things are going to begin to develop very, very quickly in the coming years. You can expect everything you know to change, and you can expect that Magical Leap’s virtual reality/augmented reality efforts will play a compelling role in all of this.
What Is Going On With Magic Leap?
At the moment, we know that Magic Leap and CEO Rony Abovitz are working on something known as Mixed Reality Lightfield. Similar to Google Glass or HoloLens, the idea is to overlay digital 3D graphics over your perspective of the real world. This is where the virtual reality headset comes into play. It is expected that Mixed Reality Lightfield will be realized through a headset combined with transparent lenses or smart glasses.
Magic Leap represents the ongoing marriage of virtual reality with augmented reality. It will bring 3D virtual elements (like holograms) into a real environment. What we don’t know at this point is how you’re going to be able to control your experience. We also don’t know if we can expect a wired product, or if Magic Leap will go the wireless route.
What we do know is that this product will be used in a variety of ways. You will be able to use it to check your email, buy some clothes, and do some research on a topic of interested. At the same time, Mixed Reality Lightfield will offer AR games that will construct worlds, figures, and challenges around your actual environment. Peter Jackson and WETA Workshop are both working on worlds and projects for the machine. Warner Bros has been an investor in the project, so it stands to reason we will also see something from them at some point.
At the moment, the first planned tech demo is slated for the end of 2016.
Meanwhile, here are a few patens Magic Leap has filled:
A virtual or augmented reality headset is provided having a frame, a pair of virtual or augmented reality eyepieces, and an interpupillary distance adjustment mechanism. The frame includes opposing arm members, a bridge positioned intermediate the opposing arm members, and one or more linear rails. The adjustment mechanism is coupled to the virtual or augmented reality eyepieces and operable to simultaneously move the eyepieces in adjustment directions aligned with the plurality of linear rails to adjust the interpupillary distance of the eyepieces.
One embodiment is directed to a user display device comprising a housing frame mountable on the head of the user, a lens mountable on the housing frame and a projection sub system coupled to the housing frame to determine a location of appearance of a display object in a field of view of the user based at least in part on at least one of a detection of a head movement of the user and a prediction of a head movement of the user, and to project the display object to the user based on the determined location of appearance of the display object.
