Once again, making headlines in the virtual and augmented reality news feeds, Google recently revealed its plans to introduce Omnitone, its high tech, web-based response to the traditional multi-channel surround sound options of yesteryear. Omnitone uses ambisonics to coordinate or map sounds in 3D space and a renderer to convert the map into comparable sound waves. Both the sound itself and the origin or location of the sound become equally important in the Omnitone model. Using web components and an eight-speaker virtual speaker setup, this full-sourced, web-based VR audio is designed to then stream the sound waves through the virtual reality experience. Demos are available, but a full product rollout has yet to be announced.
