VR Observer was extremely fortunate to sit down with Daniel Peterson, Founder and CEO of vrporn.com for in-depth interview. We enjoy the fact that regardless of the content, at the end of the day it is about the technology and the full potential and impact VR will have on society as a whole.
VRporn.com tops our list for the #1 website for VR porn, check out the article here.
VRO: Tell us a little bit about yourself, what’s your background with VR technology?
DP: I’m a child of the 90’s so for most of my life virtual reality seemed more like some quixotic dream than a legitimate career path. This all changed in 2013 when I was lucky enough to experience an early prototype of the Oculus Rift. The technology was still very primitive at that time, but that didn’t stop me from immediately recognizing it’s potential. From the moment I put on that headset, I knew that the future of entertainment was virtual. Soon after I bought the domain name VRporn.com. It’s crazy to look back and realize just how much that one decision has changed my life.
VRO: In regards to how the adult entertainment industry has impacted technology, what do you see as the biggest impact it has had? Maybe something people don’t realize they use everyday, but do not know it was initially driven by porn?
DP: There’s no doubt that porn has been a major source of innovation for centuries. The drive towards greater beauty and sexual fulfillment is one of the most fundamental principles of life and nowhere is this more true than the entertainment industry. The success of things like the video cassettes and DVDs would have been completely impossible without the allure of porn. But if you are looking for one example in particular of how porn has pushed technology forward then there’s no better case than VR porn itself. Right now it’s the porn producers — not the big Hollywood directors or video game studios — that are pushing the limits of virtual realism.
VRO: Where do you see the future of adult entertainment and VR heading?
DP: The future is always hard to predict, but I definitely think that VR porn is going to have a major impact on the way people relate to porn. As erotic experiences get more realistic, it’s inevitable that they will get more intimate as well. I believe VR porn is going to accelerate this process of individuation that we already see occurring in the traditional 2d porn industry. People are going to want increasingly personal experiences that speak directly to their specific preferences rather than to the general taste.
VRO: What excites you most about VR?
DP: There are so many exciting things about VR it’s hard to choose just one. But an aspect of VR that I find especially intriguing right now is its ability to act as a sort of equalizer. In the past, it was only the wealthiest people who had the opportunity to see the world, or it was only the most beautiful people who got the chance to have sex with their dream partner. Now with virtual reality that is beginning to change. As the price of virtual reality continues to drop more people are going to get the chance to experience their fantasies in a way they never thought possible.
VRO: What insights do you have around the confluence of Artificial Intelligence (AI), VR and haptic devices (sex toys) and the potential there?
DP: When I think about the confluence of AI and VR the first thing that comes to mind is obviously gaming. Our site has the largest collection of VR porn video games online so I’m able to see first-hand how popular computer generated porn is becoming. There’s a huge audience out there that loves to watch polygon sex, but I think the industry is still very immature at the moment. That being said, I do think it’s inevitable that the visual appearance of CGI pornstars will eventually become almost indistinguishable from those of real porn. The push for realistic AI won’t come until gaming graphics have reached that point and even then is still a ways off in my opinion. Then there’s the coming AI generated VR porn worlds, that will be mindblowing.
VRO: Do you have any plans to partner with a sex toy company, or even developing something in-house to work in conjunction with VRporn.com?
DP: We’re always looking for new ways to improve the experience for our visitors and have considered exploring options like that in the past. The difficulty is in finding a way to pursue alternative business strategies without producing a conflict of interest. It’s important to me that our site remains the most reliable and efficient way to discover all that the world of VR porn has to offer. We want both the customers and our affiliates to feel confident knowing that we are always looking out for their best interest.
VRO: What impact will VR have on porn?
DP: For the most part, VR is only going to accelerate the changes that we already see occurring in traditional 2d porn. Trends towards increased specificity, increased realism, and increased candidness are all going to be aided enormously by the immersive experience that VR provides.
VRO: As the technology improves and VR becomes even more immersive and interactive, do you think it will affect real life social interactions? For example, relationships and dating.
DP: Most definitely yes, I think that VR will have an effect on real-life social interactions. It’s undeniable that innovations like the internet and smartphone have radically changed the way we relate to one another and I think VR will be another example of this. There are obvious paths the technology will take, such as allowing true telepresence, and there is likely much more to come that we can’t predict now.
VRO: What is your favorite VR video right now?
DP: There are so many great artists doing incredible things with VR right now that it feels wrong to single out just one. I will say that I have a special appreciation for directors who are willing to break the mold and really push the limits of what VR is capable of. In particular, those directors who recognize the unique capability of VR to convey the candid moments that many other formats tend to overlook. In the same way that the silver screen demanded a more realistic form of storytelling then it’s predecessor the theater, so too does VR demand a more realistic depiction than what came before it. It’s a difficult craft to master, but I have immense respect for the VR artists who are courageous enough to take on this creative challenge.
VRO: Is there something you wish people would ask you about VRporn.com?
DP: If there’s one thing I’d like people to know about VR porn it’s that this is a company with integrity. Just because we work in the porn industry doesn’t mean we will do anything for a buck. We have a real interest in seeing virtual reality thrive and we do everything in our power to ensure that VR content is presented in the most honest and accessible way possible. At VRporn.com we have a genuine passion for virtual reality which is why I believe we’ve been so successful as a company.
