Place that same racer at the top of the Taebaek mountains about 90 miles east of Seoul and limited experience may play a huge role in the outcome at the finish line. American racers are now using virtual reality to bridge the gap between their knowledge of the local terrain and their ability to go for the gold. At this year’s Olympics, U.S. racers will show up equipped with several months’ experience virtually racing the course with the aid of a 360-degree video and headset.
