As part of a county-wide professional development initiative, Pennsylvania teachers began a training series last week that introduces them to virtual reality using various VR tools. The goal of the training is to familiarize teachers with new ways to present educational material in “a radically new fashion.” One attendee envisions his social studies class using VR to travel the world to find landmarks discussed in class. Tyler Samstag, director of instructional innovation, is excited to explore VR applications that specifically engage children in the classroom with special needs including those within a range of points on the autism spectrum. Future trainings will continue in Allegheny County, PA as teachers are challenged to keep learning fun and engaging for their tech savvy students.
