A joint effort of the City’s Economic Development Corporation and the Mayor’s Office of Media Entertainment, a Request for Proposals was issued last week for both a virtual reality and an augmented reality lab to position the city as an industry hub. Officials indicate objectives for the public project include supporting companies with infrastructure and resources, providing entrepreneurs with VR/AR tools and technologies, and funding New York City’s academic community in VR/AR development, including content creation. This initiative follows on the heels of a recent Goldman Sachs report that cited virtual reality as a potential growth obstacle for many of the city’s main industries. The deadline for proposals is April 7, 2017.
