Microsoft’s release of mixed reality (MR) headsets during a tech trad show in Taipei may help raise the level of awareness of mixed reality technology. Different from, although related in many ways to, both augmented and virtual reality, mixed reality involves the interaction of digital images with a consumer’s environment or a virtual world that’s affected by a consumer’s true environment. Microsoft’s new MR headsets are a product of collaborations with Dell, Lenovo, and Asus, and offers consistent user interface, standardized inputs, and a universal app platform. Industry experts anticipate a few more generations of MR tech before mixed reality hits mainstream, but they believe Microsoft is making great strides toward this end.
