This year the third Oculus Connect conference took a place in San Jose, California. Oculus showed not only new accessories, but also interesting content, new demos and exciting new features which will change the world of Virtual Reality. We put together the most important highlights from the conference.
1. Mark Zuckerberg: “VR is a perfect platform to put people first.”
Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg showed off the most impressive demos that covered social and future expandable VR ecosystem. The demos, which were showed at the keynote, are available at his official page on Facebook. https://www.facebook.com/zuck In the demo, we see new avatars which allow participants to express their emotions and create a full social presence for better communication. Moreover, you’re free to move from one location to another, open apps without living virtual reality, make calls and even take selfies. Zuckerberg claims to “Build a platform to put People first”.
2. VR Parties and Chat Room.
Oculus now supports VR chat room and VR parties which lets you start a voice call with up to eight people from anywhere and instantly meet up in VR to hang out. With this new feature, virtual reality opens even more doors for communication and interaction.
3. More investment.
Facebook will invest $250 million in the Oculus developer community in addition to the already invested $250 million. Aside from that, $10 million will be directed to the educational fund to develop new educational experiences.
4. Oculus is developing a VR browser Carmel.
5. Oculus Avatars.
A new feature that lets you customize your VR identity for more memorable interactions. Oculus is trying to create the magical world where you can hang out with people who are a thousand miles away. With the avatars feature, people will be able to have a true social presence, feel themselves and recognize other users in VR.
6. Standalone VR
Zuckerberg demonstrated a new prototype for a wireless version of his Oculus Rift headset – Standalone VR. At the moment there are only two versions of Virtual Reality you can have – mobile (with the support of GearVR, Google cardboard and others) and PC (Oculus Rift, HTC Vive). Zuckerberg mentioned they are working on completely new Virtual Reality experience – the Standalone VR headset which will not require use of a smartphone or PC.
7. Oculus Touch and Earphones
You can pre-order Touch controllers starting October 10 for $199. Additionally, Oculus Rift Earphones are available on Oculus.com for $49 USD and additional Rift sensors will be available for pre-order for $79 USD on Oculus.com on October 31. Both begin shipping on December 6, along with Touch.
