Magic Leap, that little $4.5 billion Florida startup, applied for a patent to end the month of August with a much anticipated reveal of a pair of smartglasses, likely to be used in augmented reality experiences. Units slightly bulkier than Magic Leap’s 2015 design were demonstrated for a group of VIPS in the spring who likened the VR headsets to swim goggles. The demo units were connected to a battery (slipped into a user’s pocket) the size of two iPhones stacked together with a separate computational portion for the GPU (worn on the belt) and a portable CD-size CPU. Industry leaders see a pair of AR smartglasses like Magic Leap is developing as the end-game to AR experiences.
