Shaped like a flying saucer, able to shoot high-quality VR video, and coming to a news feed near you, Surround 360 marks Facebook’s grand entrance into the virtual reality filming industry. With high hopes and money where their mouth is, Facebook releases today the open source schematics and instructions for their new Surround 360 camera, enabling people to unleash their own creativity to build, design, and improve their own versions of this virtual reality technology. Facebook Engineering Director Brian Cabral envisions Facebook eventually leading the way in the VR movie industry, but before that happens, he says Facebook must facilitate VR filming among its users. Surround 360 is designed to do just that. Once accessibility increases to film in full, 360-degree virtual reality and create high-tech tools for doing so, Facebook will be positioned to prove itself an impressive force in virtual reality filmmaking.
