This year’s Mobile World Congress in Barcelona unveiled VR roller coasters, flying wingsuit rides, and new AR smartphone applications, to name a few of the exciting products soon to hit the marketplace. However, one of the most exciting takeaways from the event was talk of IDC’s prediction of a 10-fold spike for AR and VR headsets by 2021. In view of the 10 million AR/VR headsets sold in 2016, this prediction indicates 100 million would be sold in 2021. While advances already are occurring in medical, industrial, and marketing applications, IDC expects that the future growth areas will include healthcare, architecture, design firms and VR arcades. An expected 62% of future sales will come from headsets shipped for consumers.
